from The Shell by Charles O'Connor

/

about

The fourth Longitude keeper, H.4. made by John Jeffrys for Harrison, around 1751. It looked like a large pocket watch, but the secret could be heard in its' rapid ticking. H4 ticked five times a second, since its' large balance beat more quickly and with larger oscillations than a typical watch.
Cook took a copy - K4, with him on the Third Voyage.
